Ballon d’Or 2026: Who’s Actually Winning It?
Harry Kane leads the 2026 Ballon d’Or race after a 70-goal season, but Lamine Yamal and PSG’s 10 nominees stand in his way. Full 30-man shortlist inside.

There’s a version of this race that looks settled, and a version that looks wide open, and which one you see depends entirely on what you think the Ballon d’Or is for.
If it rewards the year’s most devastating goalscorer, Harry Kane already has it. If it rewards the player who lit up the biggest stage football has, Lamine Yamal is holding the trophy. And if it rewards the team that has bullied Europe for two straight seasons, well, Paris Saint-Germain put ten men on the shortlist and any one of them could sneak through the middle.

France Football revealed the 30 nominees on 8 September, with the award to be presented on 26 October in London — the first time the gala has left Paris, staged in England to honour inaugural winner Sir Stanley Matthews, who received the very first trophy 70 years ago. Harry Kane: the numbers nobody can argue with
Kane is the bookies’ favourite after scoring 72 goals for club and country in 2025-26, and the case is almost boringly strong. He finally has the medals to go with it: a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double at Bayern Munich, plus six goals in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals, where the market credits his club-and-country numbers and European Golden Shoe as outweighing everyone else’s case. The betting reflects that. Kane shortened dramatically once the shortlist landed, going from 7/4 at the start of September to odds-on at 4/7, and prediction markets have him around 55%. Squawka
The counterargument is the one that has haunted this award for years: England didn’t win the World Cup, and Bayern didn’t win the Champions League. Kane’s trophy cabinet finally opened, but it opened onto a domestic double in a league Bayern win by default. Voters have historically wanted something continental or global. Kane has neither.

What he has instead is volume, consistency, and a narrative the electorate may find hard to resist — a career-long “best striker without a Ballon d’Or” finally getting his moment.
Lamine Yamal: 19 years old and holding a World Cup
If Kane’s case is built on numbers, Yamal’s is built on the single most reliable predictor in recent Ballon d’Or history: win the summer’s biggest tournament and look like the best player doing it.
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium on 19 July, and while Yamal scored just once all tournament, he won the decisive penalty in the semi-final against France and spent a month doing things to full-backs nobody else could. The historical pattern is genuinely on his side. Messi’s 2023 award rested on the 2022 World Cup, Rodri’s 2024 win on Spain’s Euros, and Dembélé’s 2025 win on PSG’s Champions League — voters keep reaching for the summer’s biggest winner. Proven Quality

And the record books are dangling in front of him. At 19, he would not merely break Ronaldo Nazário’s record as the youngest winner, set at 21 in 1997 — he would shatter it. The PSG problem
Here’s what makes this race strange. PSG account for a third of the entire shortlist, with 10 nominees, after back-to-back Champions League titles under Luis Enrique. Ballondor
That’s a blessing and a curse. Reigning winner Ousmane Dembélé told France Football he expects the trophy to stay in Paris, saying he doesn’t think the race is undecided at all — though revealingly, when asked for his own top three, he named Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Kane and Mbappé, and left himself out. The problem is arithmetic. Ten candidates from one squad means ten ways to split the Parisian vote. Vitinha is probably the most credible of them: he finished on the podium in 2025, is regarded by many as the best midfielder on the planet, added goals and assists to his game as PSG won Ligue 1 and the Champions League again, and was named Player of the Match in the final. The outside shouts
Kylian Mbappé has the individual résumé and none of the medals. He scored ten times at the World Cup to claim the Golden Boot and move clear as the competition’s all-time leading scorer, but France were beaten by Spain in the semi-finals. Rodri might be the most underrated name here. He won the World Cup’s Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, and a 2024 winner reclaiming the trophy on the back of a World Cup would be entirely consistent with how this electorate behaves. He’s around 8/1. OddspediaOddspedia
Lionel Messi is the romantic play. It’s his 17th nomination, one behind Ronaldo’s record of 18, and he finished the World Cup with the Silver Ball after eight goals and four assists, named second-best player behind Rodri. A few things jump out. No goalkeeper was nominated at all, meaning Lev Yashin remains the only keeper to ever win it. Only one Serie A player made the cut — Lautaro Martínez. Italy, the Netherlands and Germany have no representatives whatsoever. And of the active former winners, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić all missed out entirely. ESPNFOX Sports
The verdict
Kane should win it. The goals are absurd, the medals finally arrived, and the market has essentially priced him in.

But “should” has never been how this works. The Ballon d’Or has a habit of reaching for the summer’s defining image, and this summer’s defining image is a teenager in a Spain shirt dismantling defences on the way to a world title. If enough voters watch that footage back in October, Yamal wins.
