Few weeks in sport pack in as much as this one. Between Tuesday and Sunday, fans in the US, UK, Canada and Australia get the start of the NBA season, a heavyweight Champions League night in Paris, the World Series opener in Milwaukee and a possible title-deciding race weekend in Austin. The only catch is the clock. A game that is a mid-afternoon treat in New York can be a midnight session in London or a Wednesday morning in Sydney. So here is your guide to this week in sports, with the key dates, the storylines worth caring about and the start times in each country.
NBA Opening Night: Tuesday 20 October
The 2026-27 season tips off on Tuesday with a tripleheader. Boston visit Detroit at 3 pm ET, a meeting of last season’s top two Eastern Conference seeds. The main event follows: LeBron James makes his Philadelphia 76ers debut at Madison Square Garden, where the defending champion Knicks raise their first banner since 1973. The night closes with Oklahoma City at San Antonio (9:30 pm ET), a rematch of last season’s Western Conference finals, as Fox Sports explains.
Oklahoma City will be hungry for revenge. San Antonio won Game 7 on the Thunder’s home court last season and ended their repeat bid, while the Spurs, fresh from a Finals loss to the Knicks, will lean on young stars like Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. The rest of the week is just as busy. Wednesday brings Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Miami Heat debut and LaMelo Ball’s first game for Minnesota, and LeBron plays his Sixers home debut on Thursday against Cleveland. Champions League Matchday 3: PSG vs Barcelona and Arsenal at Bayern
After last week’s drama at the Etihad, where PSG beat Manchester City 4-2, the Champions League returns with two more big nights.
On Tuesday, PSG host Barcelona at the Parc des Princes. Both teams have six points: Paris after that win at City, and Barcelona after winning their first two games with a +7 goal difference, according to Squawka’s preview. Ousmane Dembélé and Ferran Torres led Paris’s 6-1 opener against Slovan Bratislava, while Lamine Yamal is pushing to start for Barça. Paris have held the upper hand in recent meetings, so expect a tense one.
The same night, Manchester City host AEK Athens and Liverpool welcome Villarreal, both at 8 pm UK time, according to Sky Sports’ fixture guide.
On Wednesday, Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich (8 pm UK) with six points from two games, having beaten Bayern 3-1 in London last November. Real Madrid host Leipzig, and Manchester United visit Como earlier, at 5:45 pm UK time. New to the format? Our guide to what the Champions League means explains how the league phase works, and our take on Arsenal or PSG asks who really rules Europe. NFL: Monday Night Football and Week 7
Tonight, the San Francisco 49ers host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football at 5:15 pm PT (8:15 pm ET) on ESPN and ABC, per the 49ers’ official site. UK fans can watch on Sky Sports NFL, though kick-off is 1:15 am on Tuesday. It is the teams’ first Monday-night meeting since 2013. Next Sunday, San Francisco visit Atlanta in Week 7 (10 am PT), so the Niners will want a clean win tonight before the road trip.
MLB: World Series Starts Friday
The Milwaukee Brewers, who swept the Dodgers in the NLCS, are waiting for their opponent. That comes from the Rays-Guardians ALCS, which was level at 2-2 after Tampa Bay’s Game 4 win on Saturday, so the pennant should be settled within days. Milwaukee finished 103-59, the best record in baseball, and are in the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982. They are also one of five teams that have never won a World Series.
According to MLB.com, Game 1 is on Friday 23 October, with a possible Game 7 on Halloween, Saturday 31 October. All games air on Fox in the US, and Milwaukee hosts Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 as the team with the best record. Evening starts are expected, so check your local listings for exact times.
Formula 1: US Grand Prix in Austin
Formula 1 heads to the Circuit of the Americas from 23 to 25 October, and there is a title on the line. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the runaway points leader, can clinch the drivers’ championship in Austin, according to Crash.net. Practice is on Friday, qualifying on Saturday, and the race starts at 3 pm local time on Sunday, which is 4 pm ET, 8 pm in the UK and 7 am Monday in Sydney. UK clocks go back that morning, so double-check your alarm. The weekend also features nightly concerts, and the next stop is Mexico City from 30 October to 1 November.
Rugby League World Cup: Group Stage Continues
Australian fans have plenty to watch too. Tonga face Lebanon in Sydney on Friday 23 October, England play France in Perth on Saturday, and on Sunday 25 October Australia meet Fiji at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane (7:05 pm local), while New Zealand play the Cook Islands in Christchurch. Australia beat New Zealand in the opener, and the final is on 15 November.

How to Follow It All Without Losing Sleep
You cannot watch everything live, and that is fine. Pick one or two marquee events, such as the Knicks banner night and Sunday’s race in Austin, and catch the rest through highlights. Most leagues post full replays within hours, so UK and Australian fans can sleep and still avoid spoilers if they mute their phones. Set calendar reminders now, because several kick-off times sit close together on Tuesday and Wednesday.
